Interview with Uberdruck

Reported by Latex Zebra / Submitted 01-10-03 18:20

From the huge success of his label Uberdruck to his remix work on labels like Sectioned, Bulletproof and Tidy Trax. A succesful DJ as well with residencies in his native Germany and guesting all over the world. He is DJ The Crow, Uberdruck, C4, Drugface to name a few. So who is the man behind these multiple aliases? Latex Zebra attempts to find out.

Thanks for talking to us. So when are you back Djing in the UK?

I´m back in the Uk on the 11th October and playing at the Camden Palace for Goodgreef vs. Frantic. And on the 18th of October I play in Bristol at the Depot.

When and how did you get into Dance Music, Djing and Production?

I got into dance music when I was 17 years old. A friend of my brother was a dj in a small club where I grew up. Every weekend I visit him in the dj box. And one time the promoter asks me if I can do a night- the dj was ill. That’s the start of my Dj career. I get into producing since 1996. The first single was a club hit. And the next three follow up singles (1997-1999) were placed in the sales charts. I decided to leave my resident club “Reactor” after 4 successful years for touring around Europe. I submitted the Club to Timo Maas he became the new resident. Since the year 2000 I separated from my old producer and started my own studio to be independent. In 2001 I met my production partner David Rzenno at a gig. We do all the productions and remixes together since then.

Can you describe your sound for someone who hasn’t heard it before?

My sound is at the harder side of the spectrum. We are different to the usual stuff. We are mixing Trance with Techno, Acid, Hard trance. The Dutch people call it hard style. We have no rules when we produce a track and we are trying to be different and interesting and we are searching always for new sounds.

How did Uberdruck Records get started?

I decided to start my own label to be independent. I got bored of the meaning of the big records company A&R's. They said 'your sound is too hard we can’t play this track' on the radio ect. I like to shock people. I like to produce for the real music freaks that love to dance and listen to the music in a real club.

There has been confusion in the past about who is DJ The Crow and who is Uberdruck. You also have a lot of aliases, who are they and what role does David Rzenno play in the Djing / Production side of things?

We use some alias to produce different styles. We are producing “Überdruck, The Crow, Drugface, Schalldruck, C4, Toolboy, Lazard”. We have many production ideas. We can’t release every month a single under the same name on one label. David Rzenno is my production partner in the studio and the other half of “Überdruck”. Dirk Nothroff was The Crow before he start working with David. David & Dirk are together “ Überdruck”.

You’re known for using quite dark and aggressive vocal samples. Do you like to scare people as well as make them dance?

This is exactly what we like. We are producing club music. We try to have fun with our own productions. I get bored of all the commercial German trance productions. For example Bank &Jones quality in the production and sound but a vocal like “watching the waves” absolutely cheeeesyyyyy. But perfect for the radio use and making money.

Any plans for more collaborative work with other producers like DJ Arne LII?

We have many plans for the future. One of the next collaborations is a track together with Dj Shredda. There are more interesting future things. But too early to talk about it.

Which is your most successful release on Uberdruck so far? Which is your favourite release?

It's not easy to say which release is most successful. We sold nearly the same number of pieces of each release. And the whole back Catalogue needs a repress every three months. I can say No1 Überdruck –now or never was the first one and best one a long time. Still then we had No.5 Drugface – cunt master which was very successful. Remember the Remixes on Picture disc! David told this to me at that time he couldn't show his grandma the picture disc. I start laughing and said ok that’s the right thing for the freaks outside. My favourite releases are “now or never, cunt master and higher level” But what can I say?!?! I love each release that we have done and I always get a good response from the crowd.

You have a new label coming soon. What’s it called and what plans do you have for this and for Uberdruck Records?

The new label is called “Schalldruck” and we work on this label with a uk distributor “Alpha Magic”. We are always searching for the direct and shortest way to the people who love and like our music. The first release produced by us is the “C4” follow up to “higher level” and is called “Blablabla”. The plans for both labels are be original and 100% Überdruck. Maybe we will release some Uk productions on the new label. We are working also on the follow up singles of the other artists - Wallstädt &Dorfler, Adam & Glund, Dj shredda ect. The next one on “Überdruck records” No17 is Adam & Glund – ready to f… and will be available in the middle of October.

You’ve done a few mixes for Sectioned Records and Bulletproof. How did this get started?

They were the first who were interested in it. I like to work with partners who see and Feel the same as we do. They like our style and are not jumping on the bandwagon while the style is unique as many other do. And they are our distributors for all the “Überdruck records” releases in the Uk. We also have cooperation with the “Drugface” project. The next “Drugface single “Fill me.. “ is coming in October as a picture disc on “Bulletproof”.

You have played all over the world at clubs big and small. Which parties have been your favourite?

My favourite and best nights I had in my old resident clubs in Germany where I had some wicked nights. Have had a very interesting gig in Russia too. I played in a boxing ring filled with beautiful girls. In the club (called “reactor”) was an old nuclear fuel rod. We finished our Australia and New Zealand Tour in august this year. The tour was very successful and in each club we played we had a nice crowd. In the Uk we had some very good parties in Plymouth at Dance Academy in London at The Fridge for Alignment and SE1 for Tidy Trax in Doncaster at The Dome to name a few. Too many good ones to remember but not a bad one so far. It’s nice to see that our sound is doing well around the globe. Music is an International language and everybody understands it.

Which country has the best crowds

The most beautiful women I’ve seen were in Russia and Poland. The best crowds I’ve seen were in the Uk and The Netherlands some amazing parties there.

What kind of sets can people expect to hear you play?

The people will hear a 100% Überdruck set. Banging hard trance – hard style absolutely danceable and original. I will play many new productions and remixes of fresh Überdruck shit.

As well as your own productions, what other labels and artists do you play?

There are too many labels to list. And not enough consistent good releases from one label to name it at the moment. I can say some of the Italian labels and some pieces of the Dutch ones we will hear.

If you could play at any party/club with any DJs what would it be?

I like to play in a club where the crowd is there for the music and not only for the big names. Sometimes you have a dark Dirty Underground club with the best feeling and vibe in it. Sometimes you have a nearly perfect super club packed with people and it gives you nothing. Sometimes the other way round. I am happy if I have a good sound system and lights and enough people to entertain. I like to play with nice guys and friends who are there for the music and not only for the big money. It’s important for me to get the right vibe and inspiration from the night. Without the club vibe you can’t produce good tunes! But ok I think an old ware house with a dark feeling and good sound system and friendly bouncers are enough. Dj´s ? There are many good dj´s outside too many to name them.

What else do you do apart from Djing and Production? Do you get any spare time?

I have a German shepherd. She needs much time like a baby. I love Italian food pasta pizza oh my I’m going too fat! And I try to play squash during the week to lose some pounds and to be vital for the weekend.

What are your plans for the future Djing and production wise?

I have decided to not DJ so much. I have to find the right balance between djing and producing. I run two labels and this is much work to do. I try to do everything I do right. David and I have many freaky ideas in mind that we will realise in the future. I will start also my own Überdruck club night soon.

What are your top three tunes of all time? They don’t have to be dance music.

Thanks for asking for only three tunes!

Chemical Brothers – Hey Boy hey Girl
Megamind – Taub
C.Y.B - Now

Finally, anything you’d like to add?

I hope to see you at one of my dj gigs and that you enjoy it! For more information visit www.djthecrow.de and feel free to sign our guest book. Every Suggestion and opinion is welcome to us.

Dance like nobody’s watching, love like you’ve never been hurt and lives your day If it were your last !
