Techno and Rabies - It's Zoology's 7th Birthday with James "Sterling" Moss

Reported by Steve Milton / Submitted 29-10-08 10:18

Let’s get the obvious out of the way. On the 7th November Zoology will be celebrating its 7th birthday. If you spend any time on the forums you’ll have no doubt noticed this already. Never let it be said that Latex Zebra and the Zoo keepers don't keep people well informed. As is usually the case on these special nights the Zoo team endeavour to fish around in their deepish pocket with their stubby little arms and manage to find a bit of spare cash to get a big name in to play as a highlight to the occasion. However in this instance they did a little better than that and managed to secure the services of the master of multiple decks and effects, Mr Techno himself, James “Sterling” Moss.

I had my arm bent with promises of free drinks and some private time with HarderFasters own Gandalf the Grey (that’s Zoology resident BSE to those who don’t know); so went off in search of Mr Moss to see if he had anything interesting to say.

Welcome once again to the pages of HF.

Always a pleasure

You always seem quite a busy chap with the jet setting around the globe and of course the management of your label, so what else have you been up to, any forthcoming tracks we should look out for?

Been working hard on some great new stuff - forthcoming Hard As Funk material with Paul Janes and a massive Stay Up Forever release due in November called I’m Bored by Chris Liberator and myself, which is a tongue-in-cheek techno romp which should poke a finger in the eye of the fashionistas while kick starting the revolution for hard music to re-assert itself!

How was it working with Chris? When you’re working on a collaboration do you sit and argue over the keyboard while drinking cheap cider or is it all very civilised with cucumber sandwiches and Earl Grey?

It’s lots of fun working with Chris and I think we’re really honing our sound after the Maximum Minimum and Yolk releases we worked on. We have a strict diet of Special Brew with beluga caviar on the side, I think is a nice balance of lower class and upper class, and we always have to make time for a cigar break also, while getting down and dirty.

Now as I understand it you’ve either become some kind of managerial fat cat or you’re just working as the tea boy. What is all this Boardroom malarkey all about and have you got any chocolate digestives?

The Boardroom is a collective of executives, myself included, who get together at board meetings creating material to release to prospective share holders while drinking lots of tea. Productivity is up so we’re working on our market share.

I’m told that Rotters Golf Club isn’t in fact where cads and bounders go to tee off but a record label and that they’re releasing an album for this Boardroom collective you’re involved with. Are daft names something that attracts you and what’s this album all about?

Rotters Golf Club is in fact the record label of scene pioneer – Andrew Weatherall. After lots of activity centred around the Boardroom studio (which itself is part of the Rotters Golf Club Studio) a fantastic selection of tracks have been put together for ‘Andrew Weatherall Vs The Boardroom’, which will be released early November. The album features three new Boardroom tracks from E.S.C., Radical Majik and Le Sarge en Board, plus remixes by Mr. Weatherall himself and Boardroom remixes of two Two Lone Swordsmen tracks, (Patient Saints and Shack 54). And no I don’t have a penchant for daft names, but perhaps for daft grooves!

OK, let’s move on now and delve a little deeper into the life of Mr Moss. Is it true you’ve taken to big cat wrestling and have you been offered your dream place in the circus?

Ah yes, I was in South Africa recently at a gig with Teknotribe, when I kind of accidentally got bitten by a jaguar on my day off! I did get offered a place in the circus, but the thought of getting attacked daily might wear me down so politely declined.
So the oversized tabby took a bit of a disliking to you. Do you think it was your aftershave or do you think perhaps, unlike Zebra’s it just doesn’t like techno?

Well you know I have techno coursing through my veins, so it must have liked it because it was after my blood! It’s perfect really for Zoology as after a months worth of rabies injections I’m ready to hit the Zoo with the spirit of the jaguar guiding me through my paces.

So are rabies jabs as painful as they’re made out to be and will you be contracting any more rare and unpleasant infections or diseases in the near future – something the Zoo keepers might need to know about before the 7th November perhaps?

They’re not very nice at all. The skull and crossbones on the vile was the first giveaway! But I’m fit as a fiddle and sharp as a thistle now so I’m gonna be getting down with all the other animals on the night.

While we’re on the subject of Zoo will we be seeing the usual mix of trickery and effects in the booth of 414?

Yeah will have loads of stuff on the go – giraffes, gazelles, lions, cheetahs, if I can get them all plugged in they should spew out some interesting noises. I can even throw a Zebra into the mix.

I once had a slightly unnerving situation once while playing for Zoology involving a rather odd looking chap who seemed intent on being my best friend for most of the way through my set. Do you have any special techniques in getting rid of these, unique people, or do you just keep your headphones on and pretend they’re not there?

Well considering my newfound place in the animal kingdom, it would be impolite to do anything other than bite them very hard until extreme blood loss dis-allowed the power of conversation

Incidentally who is the scariest person you know and why?

Could be me when the full moon comes out.

And finally . . . sponge or stone?

Stone, cause I’m a heavyweight, and I’ll go twelve rounds.

On that note we’ll draw things to a close. Thanks for your time James and remember if there’s a drunken fool with grey hair making an arse of himself in front of you whilst you’re playing his name in BSE, unless he’s a bit on the short side then it’ll be me.

So there you have it. Big cats, nasty diseases and strange names, all things you’d naturally associate with Zoology and just some of the reasons so many people keep going back. I’m not sure what the others are so if anyone finds out contact me at daftgit@hardfaster.net. Oh who am I kidding? It’s a great little promotion with a good mix of residents and guests and a large dose of not taking themselves too seriously. They’re 7 years old. Happy Birthday Zoology.

Do I get my private time now? BSE, come here sunshine, look what I’ve got for you.

See you on the dance floor.

At: CLUB 414 [map]

From: 10pm till 6am
Cost: £8 Paying Guestlist £12 On The Door

More: Club 414 is, and has, been home to some defining parties on the Dance Music scene. With parties such as Milk, Nuclear Free Zone and Just Groove long being remembered for their music, DJs and full houses.
Maybe in years to come Zoology will be viewed alongside those promotions as part of the 414 legend. Maybe we already are and we didn’t get the memo.
Over the years we’ve had everyone from DJs straight out of their bedroom to chart topping acts, DJs flown in from Europe and team ups with some of the biggest Hard Dance promotions on the scene. We’ve done quite a bit, but we're not done yet.
For 7oology’s 7th Birthday (do you see what we’ve done there) we decided not to cram the line up with the biggest DJs we could find. Instead we’ve opted for our usual plan of finding a DJ that is extremely well respected and someone who will do more than just bang out a load of anthems one after the other.
So we are pleased to announce that James “Sterling” Moss will be delivery a special 2 hour set of genre spanning, musical mayhem with multiple decks, FX and possibly more.
James has played all over the World at events and to crowds that most DJs can only dream of. It’ll be a great chance to see a master up close and personal.
As usual we like to back up the star guest with a DJ who is bubbling under and for that we have Rick Deacon whose fantastic taste in Tech Trance has see him earn sets at some fine parties including The Gallery and Spangulation.
The residents make up the rest of the line up with a huge 3 hour, 4 Way b2b set with Latex Zebra, B.S.E., Jim Wild and returning resident RedCaT. We’ll also have Markus Buhmann and Matt Dahl warming things up in their usual fashion.
The club will be nicely dressed for the occasion, we can’t say the same for the DJs though.

We hope to see many of you there to help us celebrate.

More: With the 7th birthday festivities’ continuing on till god knows when it’s only right that you should know which choice DJs will be keeping you going all morning long!

With top class releases on his own label, DJSA Records, UK based Mondo Records and top Dutch imprint, High Contrast alongside a Podcast with 100,000+ subscribers, a new show on DI.fm and FM stations around the world, it’s no wonder 2009 looks set to be the year that Steve Anderson finally breaks through to the mainstream. Make sure you catch him here first opening up the afterparty madness with some of his unreleased trance monsters.

Pairing up with resident Adam Symbiosis this month for some back to back nonsense is understated DJ Sarah Goodson. With a taste in music that spans genres, this set looks to be as diverse as it danceable. Make sure you save your energy for this one.

Finally completing the line up for this month and closing things down for us is HF Ibiza runner up, Matt H. Having shown his skills on the beachfront at Kanya, we get him back to the 414 decks after a cameo appearance a few months ago. Remember, sleep is for Sunday!
