Spice Lounge's recent history as a funky little dance club is retained in its feel-good atmosphere. People still come to drink cocktails and dance, only now they can also enjoy a slap-up meal in a smart burgundy and white space. A comprehensive menu specialises in modern Indian dishes, pick of which are the sensory sizzlers - barbecued chunks of freshly-spiced meat. Good chicken curry classics include passanda and korma, and there's a relatively strong vegetarian selection. Everything's cooked with vegetable oil (as opposed to the traditional ghee) and thoughtfully presented on white china by waiters dressed all in black. 'Proper' tall candles glow at night to create virtually the only candlelit dinners on Cleveland Street.
The main Spice Lounge restaurant/bar has 40 covers, and room for receptions of 70 guests; it's particularly popular with corporate events organisers. A cosy corner lounge area near the entrance can be booked for groups of 10. Downstairs is a smart clubby cocktail bar suitable for lively pre and post meal drinks. Or it can be hires exclusively for 120 guests. There's a dance floor and muliticoloured lighting to accompany the funky house/pop/chart music. Live DJ set every Friday. An international wine list starts at £11 for a bottle of house, rising to £25. Closed Sundays. Signature dish: The chef's sizzlers.
Trivia fact: Spice Lounge was formerly the funky Southside Bar.
