Go!Zilla, like its near namesake, is a force to be reckoned with. Having built a reputation for consistently discerning, adventurous line-ups - which have bucked the genre-specific norm to include artists as diverse as Faze Action, The Emperor Machine, The Mole, The Robert Owens Band, and Glimpse in recent months - the next edition takes place on Saturday 22nd November at Cargo, with live music from DC Recordings' disco deviants Padded Cell. The location is Cargo, which Go!Zilla has callled home for over 18 months now; situated in East London's clubbing heartland, its acoustics and dancefloor space make it the perfect setting for Go!Zilla's marriage of DJs and live music.
Padded Cell is the alter ego of London-based DJ/producers Richard Sen and Neil Beatnik. Combining rolling punk-funk percussion and disco breaks with live instrumentation and an electro sensibility, Padded Cell's music is fierce but playful, and always intoxicating. Following a run of brilliant singles, including their classic debut, 'Signal Failure', Padded Cell emerged from their studio earlier this year with the acclaimed Night Must Fall - a kaleidoscopic album that saw them give full vent to their fascination with the dark side of disco, and featured guest appearances from Chloe Battant and Liquid Liquid's Neil Young. Live, Padded Cell is a fearsome and compelling proposition, and one that's aimed squarely at the dancefloor - with live keys and basslines bringing a devilish energy and immediacy to Sen and Beatnik's head-spinning electronics.
DJ support comes from Go!Zilla resident James Priestley. Along with his partner in crime, Giles Smith, Priestley is the brains behind the notorious secretsundaze parties, and as such is one of the key figures behind London's post-millennium clubbing renaissance. He's also a producer of increasing stature, working with Dan Berkson on original work for Simple Records and remixes for the likes of 2020 Soundsystem and Spektrum. October sees Priestley and Giles Smith release their secretsundaze Vol. 2 mix CD, the follow-up to last year's acclaimed Vol.1.
With more live acts and DJs to be announced, this looks set to be another riveting chapter in the ever-developing Go!Zilla story. Miss it at your peril.
